I let my subscription to Dialogue<\/em> lapse many years ago, and haven\u2019t paid much attention to it since.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Doing so was partly a (tiny) protest. \u00a0I\u2019m sure that nobody noticed it, there or anywhere else.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mostly, though, it was because I\u2019d been finding the journal boring, predictable, and depressing. \u00a0Every time I found a copy in my mailbox, my heart sank. \u00a0It was a (more or less regular) downer.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

As an active, committed believer, I just wasn\u2019t finding much in it that was of use to me in trying to be a thoughtful Latter-day Saint \u2014 or, at least, there was more corrosive negativity and criticism of my church and my faith than I wanted to read on a regular basis, or support with my subscription money.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I remember seeing a survey of Dialogue<\/em> readers, at one point long ago, and the data suggested, to my surprise, that the large majority of them were, like me, believing and active. \u00a0Yet the journal didn\u2019t seem to me to be serving them very well, and its articles didn\u2019t seem representative of them.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I wanted serious reflection. \u00a0I\u2019m not averse to difficult questions, and to the expression of serious concerns. \u00a0But . . . well, you get the picture.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

As I say, I haven\u2019t really looked at Dialogue<\/em> very much since then. \u00a0Maybe it\u2019s improved already.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Now, though, Boyd Petersen has been selected as the journal\u2019s new editor:<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve known him for years. \u00a0He\u2019s an excellent choice.<\/p>\n

Boyd\u2019s (shudder!) a Democrat, of course, and there will probably continue to be things in Dialogue<\/em> that sadden me and with which I disagree.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

But who knows? \u00a0I may even consider resubscribing.<\/p>\n
