Luke 8:40-56<\/a><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
These accounts are interesting, among other reasons, because the story of one miracle is contained within the story of another.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
I\u2019ll concentrate on just one of them here.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Try to imagine the case of the woman with a hemorrhage. \u00a0For twelve years. \u00a0One hundred and forty-four months. \u00a0Six hundred and twenty-four weeks.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Near financial ruin. \u00a0(She had, the accounts say, spent nearly everything she had.) \u00a0And still getting worse, the gospels tell us.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Ritually unclean, too. \u00a0Therefore unmarriageable. \u00a0A social outcast. \u00a0 And, even if already married, unable to bear children.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Yet the mere faithful touch of Jesus\u2019 garment heals her.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
But he perceives that \u201cvirtue\u201d has gone out of him.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Does that mean that he\u2019s lost something of his goodness?<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
No. \u00a0Virtue<\/em> here means power<\/em>. \u00a0(Shakespeare speaks fairly often of the \u201cvirtue\u201d of herbs and potions.)<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
In fact \u2014 and ironically despite the tendency of our sexist culture to connect it more with women than with men \u2014 it\u2019s originally connected with the notion of \u201cmanliness.\u201d \u00a0Vir<\/em>, in Latin, means \u201cman,\u201d in the sense of a masculine human. \u00a0Think, too, of the cognate word werewolf,<\/em>\u00a0or \u201cman-wolf.\u201d \u00a0(I once made this explanation in a Gospel Doctrine class and failed to erase the words virtue<\/em> and werewolf<\/em> from the blackboard. \u00a0I\u2019m told that when a different ward\u2019s Relief Society came into the room after I was done, they were very puzzled \u2014 understandably so \u2014 as to what kind of lesson had just been taught there.)<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
We\u2019ll return to the story of Jairus\u2019s daughter at a later point.<\/p>\n
