I\u2019m strongly tempted to issue a similar decree in my own classes next term.<\/p>\n

And not just because I was more than a little irritated, last week, as I noticed a student smiling and laughing\u00a0at her computer throughout much of my class.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
I said noting. \u00a0But I noticed.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
I\u2019m a preternaturally engaging lecturer, of course. \u00a0The soul of wit. \u00a0Crammed with deep knowledge and scintillating insights. \u00a0Eloquent beyond compare. \u00a0So it\u2019s not surprising that my students beam with pleasure and giggle with delight when I\u2019m teaching. \u00a0I would expect no less.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
But the timing<\/em> of her laughter was off. \u00a0It was out of sync.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
There isn\u2019t a whole lot of humor, truth be told, in the derivation of the term Sufism<\/em> from the Arabic word for \u201cwool.\u201d \u00a0Not much that I<\/em> can see, anyway. \u00a0And I doubt that she could see much, either.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve read a couple of items over the past few months about this manual note-taking versus computer note-taking, and I would like to see the psychological study that the author cites. \u00a0I very much expect, based upon my own personal experience, that her thesis is true.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
And implementing a no-laptop policy would spare me further irritation.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
A few years ago, I substituted for a friend, delivering a wonderful illustrated presentation on mosque architecture. \u00a0I was impressed by the studiousness of a group of guys toward the back of the class, who were all earnestly typing into their computers as I discoursed learnedly before them. \u00a0After the class, my wife, who had decided to drop in and who had been sitting on the back row, told me that they were all competing against one another in some sort of online game. \u00a0They hadn\u2019t been paying the slightest attention to my blatherings. \u00a0If I\u2019d sat down to read a novel to myself, or had simply settled in for an afternoon nap, they wouldn\u2019t have noticed.<\/p>\n
