Bush presents the Presidential Medal of Freedom to William Safire in 2006<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cNot long ago, I advertised for perverse rules of grammar, along the lines of \u201cRemember to never split an infinitive\u201d and \u201cThe passive voice should never be used.\u201d The notion of making a mistake while laying down rules (\u201cThimk,\u201d \u201cWe Never Make Misteaks\u201d) is highly unoriginal, and it turns out that English teachers have been circulating lists of fumblerules for years. As owner of the world\u2019s largest collection, and with thanks to scores of readers, let me pass along a bunch of these never-say-neverisms:<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Avoid run-on sentences they are hard to read.\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Don\u2019t use no double negatives.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Use the semicolon properly, always use it where it is appropriate; and never where it isn\u2019t.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Reserve the apostrophe for it\u2019s proper use and omit it when its not needed.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Do not put statements in the negative form.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Verbs has to agree with their subjects.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* No sentence fragments.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Avoid commas, that are not necessary.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* If you reread your work, you will find on rereading that a great deal of repetition can be avoided by rereading and editing.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* A writer must not shift your point of view.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Eschew dialect, irregardless.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* And don\u2019t start a sentence with a conjunction.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Don\u2019t overuse exclamation marks!!!<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Place pronouns as close as possible, especially in long sentences, as of 10 or more words, to their antecedents.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Writers should always hyphenate between syllables and avoid un-necessary hyph-ens.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Write all adverbial forms correct.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Don\u2019t use contractions in formal writing.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Writing carefully, dangling participles must be avoided.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* It is incumbent on us to avoid archaisms.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* If any word is improper at the end of a sentence, a linking verb is.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Steer clear of incorrect forms of verbs that have snuck in the language.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Take the bull by the hand and avoid mixed metaphors.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Avoid trendy locutions that sound flaky.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Never, ever use repetitive redundancies.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Everyone should be careful to use a singular pronoun with singular nouns in their writing.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* If I\u2019ve told you once, I\u2019ve told you a thousand times, resist hyperbole.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Also, avoid awkward or affected alliteration.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Don\u2019t string too many prepositional phrases together unless you are walking through the valley of the shadow of death.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Always pick on the correct idiom.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* \u201cAvoid overuse of \u2018quotation \u201cmarks.\u201d\u2018\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* The adverb always follows the verb.<\/span><br style=\"color: #181818;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">* Last but not least, avoid cliches like the plague;
