By the way, the organization of a conference at BYU by the founder of FARMS around\u00a0these four scholars\u00a0seems difficult to reconcile with\u00a0the supposed fear of non-Mormon scholarship and non-Mormon scholars that certain writers have recently discerned among Latter-day Saint apologists. \u00a0But it\u2019s potentially a very damaging insinuation against the likes of John Gee and yr obd\u2019t servant, so the standard of evidence required to demonstrate our alleged hostility toward non-LDS viewpoints shouldn\u2019t be rigorous.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Professor Charlesworth\u2019s presentation was entitled \u201cJesus\u2019 Last Passover and the Temple That He Knew.\u201d \u00a0I\u2019ll offer a few notes on things that caught my attention; I make no claim to be complete, to have caught the entire argument, or to have identified the most crucial points. \u00a0(I\u2019m more interested in listening at the moment than in writing.) \u00a0These are impressionistic notes, not systematic ones.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
He\u00a0started off by declaring two notions completely false, and accepted by no serious scholar: \u00a01) \u00a0Jesus didn\u2019t disdain the temple. \u00a02) Early Christians didn\u2019t believe that Jesus replaced<\/em> the temple.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Along the way, he paid tribute to the Latter-day Saints, and their concept of an open canon. \u00a0Some apocryphal New Testament materials may actually be earlier than the canonical texts, and the idea of a closed canon, he says, improperly seeks to close the mouth of God.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
One of his principal points this morning was arguing for the authenticity of the New Testament passages in which Jesus laments Jerusalem (\u201cO Jerusalem, Jerusalem,\u00a0<\/span>thou\u00a0that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under\u00a0<\/span>her\u00a0wings, and ye would not!\u201d<\/span>). \u00a0For various reasons, he contends that the statement must genuinely come from Jesus \u2014 a proposition denied by more than a few critics.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
He also had some words about the increasing willingness of scholars to regard the once-widely-dismissed gospel of John as a legitimate source of information about the historical Jesus.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
An important point: \u00a0When Jesus teaches in Jerusalem, he teaches in the temple. \u00a0Almost exclusively.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Charlesworth recalled a conversation with a brilliant colleague, who said that he admired Jesus except when he lost his temper in the temple. \u00a0Charlesworth responded that he regarded the cleansing of the temple as a high point in the Savior\u2019s ministry: \u00a0\u201cIf you\u2019re not enraged by certain things, what kind of morality do you have?\u201d \u00a0Jesus was indignant at the exploitation and defrauding of the poor, and at the desecration of a sacred place.<\/p>\n
