The young Michelangelo\u2019s astonishing Piet\u00e0, located in the Basilica of St. Peter in Vatican City<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
In the printed program, the presentation given by George Zervos is entitled \u201cNew Light on an Early Jewish-Christian Temple Source.\u201d \u00a0His first PowerPoint slide, however, gave his title as \u201cThe Genesis of Mary: The Mary of Faith and the Mary of History\u201d and featured an image of Michelangelo\u2019s Piet\u00e0.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
But his actual presentation, devoted at least partially to the ancient (possibly even first-century) apocryphal text of The Genesis of Mary<\/em>, did allude to\u00a0that text\u2019s uncharacteristically positive Christian\u00a0attitude toward the Jewish temple. \u00a0But then, for the most part, he spent the rest of his time\u00a0tracing\u00a0the steadily growing veneration of Mary in the first centuries of Christian history (phases in what he calls \u201cthe amplification of Mary\u201d) and then contrasts that veneration with what Mary actually was \u2014 a first-century Palestinian Jewish woman of the lower classes. \u00a0No glory. \u00a0No grandeur. \u00a0Nothing about the \u201cever-virgin queen of heaven\u201d who was, among many other things, the \u201cinvincible general\u201d of the armies of the Byzantine Empire.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
In the end, though, he returned to the prominent role played by the temple of Jerusalem in the Protevangelium of James<\/em>, which is, to a significant degree, a reworking of The Genesis of Mary<\/em>.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Again, those of you who missed this program in Provo today still have a chance to attend pretty much the same program tomorrow, on the campus of Utah State University in Logan.<\/p>\n
