The difference, it seems to me, is that the old FARMS and the early Maxwell Institute were overtly, vocally, \u201corthodoxly,\u201d and unmistakably Mormon. \u00a0Our overall point of view was clear. \u00a0And, if one of our non-LDS authors made an argument or an assertion that we felt needed countering or required contradiction from us, we didn\u2019t hesitate to do so. \u00a0Politely and cogently, I hope, but without reservation. \u00a0People knew where we stood.<\/p>\n

The New Maxwell Institute is, by contrast, rather inscrutable. \u00a0It seems to have adopted a position of studied neutrality or objectivity \u2014 necessary at Claremont or at Utah State, but (to put it mildly) uncharacteristic of Brigham Young University. \u00a0For example, it leaves denials of the existence of the plates of the Book of Mormon in its own pages<\/em>\u00a0quite uncontradicted, and it isn\u2019t otherwise known anymore for its explicit advocacy of the Restoration. \u00a0Context is all.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
