Matthew 13:24-30<\/a><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
There is probably no more eloquent commentary on this parable than John Newton\u2019s hymn lyrics \u2014 remember the great John Newton, who also composed \u201cAmazing Grace,\u201d drawn from his own dramatic autobiography? \u2014 which were set to the wonderful music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\u2019s \u201cBei M\u00e4nnern welche Liebe f\u00fchlen\u201d (from Die Zauberfl\u00f6te<\/em>) and which once (but no longer) appeared in the Latter-day Saint hymnal:<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
1 Though in the earthly church below
\nThe wheat and tares together grow;
\nJesus ere long will weed the crop,
\nAnd pluck the tares, in anger up.<\/p>\n
2 Will it relieve their horrors there,
\nTo recollect their stations here?
\nHow much they heard, how much they knew,
\nHow long among the wheat they grew!<\/p>\n
3 Oh! this will aggravate their case!
\nThey perish under means of grace;
\nTo them the word of life and faith,
\nBecame an instrument of death.<\/p>\n
4 We seem alike when thus we meet,
\nStrangers might think we all were wheat;
\nBut to the Lord\u2019s all-searching eyes,
\nEach heart appears without disguise.<\/p>\n
5 The tares are spared for various ends,
\nSome, for the sake of praying friends;
\nOthers, the Lord, against their will,
\nEmploys his counsel to fulfill.<\/p>\n
6 But though they grow so tall and strong,
\nHis plan will not require them long;
\nIn harvest when he saves his own,
\nThe tares shall into hell be thrown.<\/p>\n
