And He opened the\u00a0book and found the place where it was written,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-NASB-25082\" class=\"text Luke-4-18\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 128);\"><span class=\"woj\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">18\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<span class=\"small-caps\">The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me<\/span>,<\/span><\/span><br>\n<span class=\"text Luke-4-18\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 128);\"><span class=\"woj\"><span class=\"small-caps\">Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><br>\n<span class=\"text Luke-4-18\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 128);\"><span class=\"woj\"><span class=\"small-caps\">He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives<\/span>,<\/span><\/span><br>\n<span class=\"text Luke-4-18\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 128);\"><span class=\"woj\"><span class=\"small-caps\">And recovery of sight to the blind<\/span>,<\/span><\/span><br>\n<span class=\"text Luke-4-18\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 128);\"><span class=\"woj\"><span class=\"small-caps\">To set free those who are oppressed<\/span>,<\/span><\/span><br>\n<span id=\"en-NASB-25083\" class=\"text Luke-4-19\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 128);\"><span class=\"woj\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">19\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"small-caps\">To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"first-line-none\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 128);\"><span id=\"en-NASB-25084\" class=\"text Luke-4-20\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">20\u00a0<\/span>And He\u00a0closed the\u00a0book, gave it back to the attendant and\u00a0sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NASB-25085\" class=\"text Luke-4-21\"><span class=\"versenum\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">21\u00a0<\/span>And He began to say to them,\u00a0<span class=\"woj\">\u201cToday this Scripture has been fulfilled in your\u00a0hearing.\u201d \u00a0(New American Standard Version)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I suppose it\u2019s not surprising that people who think they know somebody well will be inclined to be unimpressed with that person. \u00a0Familiarity, as the saying goes, breeds contempt.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No man, as another saying has it, is a hero to his valet.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000020;\">The source of this dictum is unclear, but Montaigne (d.\u00a01592) said \u201c<\/span>Peu d\u2019hommes ont est\u00e9 admir\u00e9s par leurs domestiques<i>,<\/i><span style=\"color: #000020;\">\u201d and Madame Cornuel (d. 1694) wrote to similar\u00a0effect: \u201c<\/span>Il n\u2019y a pas de grand homme pour son valet de chambre.<span style=\"color: #000020;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\n<\/p><p style=\"color: #000000;\">There\u2019s a statement attributed to the German philosopher G. W. F. Hegel, though, that I think handles this proverb well: \u00a0\u201cNo man is a hero to his valet.\u00a0This is not because the hero is not a hero, but because the valet is a valet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tours of Christian sites in Israel still go \u2014 I\u2019ll \u00a0take a group there next week \u2014 to the traditional site at which the people of Nazareth sought to toss Jesus from a \u00a0cliff. \u00a0It\u2019s called Mount Precipice. \u00a0Whether it\u2019s the right place or not, I don\u2019t know. \u00a0It might well be. \u00a0In any case, it has a wonderful view. \u00a0Tourists there begin to realize just how close together many of the famous biblical sites are, covering the whole long range of\u00a0biblical chronology.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 Matthew 13:53-58 Mark 6:1-6 Luke 4:16-30 Compare John 4:44;
