The original Ruby\u2019s Diner is this one, on the Balboa pier. But that\u2019s not the Ruby\u2019s that I typically went to as a child. Mine was the one further down the coast, right beside the Pacific Coast Highway, overlooking the sea.

Things are a bit out of joint here in California.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

A few days ago, for example, when we dropped by Ruby\u2019s Diner<\/a> along the Pacific Coast Highway just below\u00a0Newport Beach in order for me to get a date milkshake \u2014 I\u2019ve been getting date milkshakes there for as long as I can remember \u2014 they were out of dates!<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what Californian\u2019s get, I think, for putting Jerry Brown back into the governor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

But I was relieved to see, despite all the bad news about California\u2019s epic drought, that the Pacific Ocean is still high enough to reach the beaches and the piers.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

And just a few minutes ago, my wife and I went with friends to Slater \u2018s 50\/50<\/a>\u00a0for hamburgers. \u00a0Fantastic. \u00a0I had the B\u2019B\u2019B\u2019 Bacon Burger<\/a>. \u00a0One of the best burgers I\u2019ve ever tasted.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Slater\u2019s specializes, among other things, in burger patties that are 50% beef and 50% ground bacon.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I have to warn you, though, that there is no cardiologist on the premises, and that, thus far, no rabbi has been located who\u2019s been willing to pronounce the 50\/50 meat patties kosher.<\/p>\n
