There\u2019s some very worthwhile live theater in Utah.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Last week, my wife and I enjoyed a healthy portion of it, but I\u2019ve neglected to report on what we saw \u2014 and I know that millions out there must be panting with irresistible curiosity about this matter.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Herewith, then, a brief summary:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

On Monday night, my wife went with a friend for a performance, at Orem\u2019s Hale Center Theater, of James Lapine\u2019s and Stephen Sondheim\u2019s very popular Into the Woods<\/em>. \u00a0Since I\u2019ve seen Into the Woods<\/em> several times recently, and have never much cared for it \u2014 I don\u2019t care for the music and I dislike its cynical theme \u2014 I nobly and generously donated my ticket for their evening.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The next night, though, all three of us attended a performance of\u00a0The Little Mermaid<\/em> at West Valley City\u2019s Hale Centre Theatre. \u00a0In this genre, I prefer Beauty and the Beast.\u00a0<\/em> (Alan Menken and Howard Ashman did the songs for both, but I like\u00a0the latter more.) \u00a0It was entertaining and well done. \u00a0They really use their stage well.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Hale theaters are genuine Utah treasures. \u00a0May they continue to prosper.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Another state treasure is Michael Ballam\u2019s Utah Festival Opera<\/a>, in Logan.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

We went up to Logan on Friday, and, going through Saturday evening, took in four different performances. \u00a0All of them \u2014 including, on the first day, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying<\/em> and Michael Ballam himself in the title role of The Man of La Mancha<\/em> \u2014 were good.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

We saw two more pieces on Saturday:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always disliked Rodgers and Hammerstein\u2019s Carousel<\/em>, despite its wonderful music, for the sheer life-crippling stupidity of Julie Jordan\u2019s love for the thug and lowlife Billy Bigelow and for the play\u2019s seemingly blas\u00e9 (and very dated) attitude toward violent spouse abuse. \u00a0I\u2019ve seen a few too many such cases in real life to find them even slightly romantic. \u00a0But the music is<\/em> beautiful, and the cast was very, very good.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Finally, we saw Puccini\u2019s La boh\u00e8me<\/em>, which was my favorite of the two days. \u00a0Glorious music and an affecting story. \u00a0I still have Puccini tunes going through my head, and not merely from La boh\u00e8me<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Marrying a theater major was one of my<\/em> best decisions.<\/p>\n
