Luke 17:7-10<\/a><\/p>\n

There is an analogous passage in the Book of Mormon, in King Benjamin\u2019s marvelous speech. \u00a0And, to me anyway, there\u2019s a striking anecdote\u00a0(from outside the Book of Mormon) in which it plays a role:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Truman Madsen once told me of a year-end Christmas party for the missionaries who served on Temple Square. \u00a0This was a long time ago, when those missionaries were older local men rather than today\u2019s young full-time sister missionaries.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

President Joseph Fielding Smith, of the Council of the Twelve, was to be the concluding speaker at the dinner party. \u00a0He had been allotted a fair amount of time for his remarks.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Apparently, at least to President Smith\u2019s taste, the earlier remarks and testimonials of the evening took a bit too much of a self-congratulatory turn, about all of the great things that the Temple Square missionaries had accomplished on behalf of the Lord\u2019s Church during the preceding twelve months.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

So, when his turn came to speak, he stood up, opened his scriptures, and read Mosiah 2:20-21<\/a> to them. \u00a0\u201cIn the name of Jesus Christ, Amen,\u201d he said when he\u2019d finished reading, and sat down.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I may be mistaken, but I seem to recall that Truman was there in the audience, and that, at least in retrospect, he thought President Smith\u2019s non-speech rather well-aimed. \u00a0He told me that you could have heard the proverbial pin drop, afterwards.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

You might think the rebuke just a tad sharp, and perhaps it was. \u00a0But the Lord\u2019s statement in Luke 17:7-10, the passage under consideration here, is pretty tough, too. \u00a0And it\u2019s certainly thought-provoking.<\/p>\n
