\u00a0<\/p>\n
As I\u2019ve repeatedly said, one would be hard pressed to find\u00a0any doctrine of salvation by grace alone in the teachings of Jesus\u00a0\u2014 at least,\u00a0as they\u2019re recorded in the four New Testament gospels.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The case of Zacchaeus illustrates my point nicely: \u00a0Jesus plainly approves of this diminutive publican\u2019s generosity to the poor and his commitment to (going beyond) justice. \u00a0Jesus doesn\u2019t tell Zacchaeus that his righteousness is as filthy rags or that it represents an arrogant and contemptible effort to earn his own way into heaven.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
On the other hand, righteousness plainly isn\u2019t enough on its own. \u00a0Zacchaeus has been behaving righteously for some time, it seems, but only \u201cthis day\u201d (or \u201ctoday\u201d) does salvation come to his house \u2014 because he\u2019s welcomed Jesus into it.<\/p>\n
