John 12:1-8<\/a><\/p>\nCompare Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; Luke 7:36-50<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
One of the worries that sometimes afflicts me when I think about caring for the poor is whether an expenditure on anything<\/em> else beyond absolute necessities can be justified while there\u2019s poverty in the world. \u00a0So long as hunger exists, should there be ski boats, symphony orchestras, good restaurants, degrees in philosophy, professional sports, or art museums? \u00a0But, without such things (and the many comparable things that could be mentioned), wouldn\u2019t this world be a dismal and charmless place?<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Jesus seems to suggest an answer to the question: \u00a0Yes, it\u2019s important to help the poor. \u00a0But there are other important things, too.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The question still troubles me, though.<\/p>\n
