Luke 18:31-34<\/a><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Luke\u2019s comment, that the apostles \u201cunderstood none of these things; this saying was hid from them, and they did not grasp what was said,\u201d is puzzling.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Jesus\u2019 statement seems perfectly clear, entirely straightforward. \u00a0There\u2019s nothing in it that\u2019s difficult to grasp, conceptually. \u00a0It\u2019s not Hegel or Kant.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
So what does it mean that they didn\u2019t understand or grasp what Jesus was saying?<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
I suppose that one possibility is simply this: \u00a0He was so dominant, his personality so alive, his leadership so absolute, and his power so manifest, that they just couldn\u2019t comprehend that he would die, let alone that he would be seized by others and forcefully put to death. \u00a0They were probably still thinking of him as the Messiah in the (more or less) standard Jewish way: \u00a0He would, pretty soon, triumph over his enemies, drive the Romans out, and establish the earthly Kingdom of Heaven. \u00a0They didn\u2019t fully grasp, maybe didn\u2019t really grasp at all, the fact that his Messiahship would be enacted through suffering and death.<\/p>\n
