Luke 19:11-27<\/a><\/p>\nCompare Matthew 25:14-30; Mark 13:14<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
This is a tough parable. \u00a0But one of its applications seems absolutely clear: \u00a0We\u2019re to make use of the gifts that we\u2019ve been given (whether financial, artistic, managerial, intellectual, musical, or whatever) to do good. \u00a0We\u2019re not supposed to simply sit on them.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
We should be asking every day, \u201cAm I doing the things that I should be doing? \u00a0Are there things that I ought to be doing that I\u2019m neglecting? \u00a0What does the Lord expect of me? What is it that he wants me to do? \u00a0Am I squandering my time and my gifts? \u00a0Am I using them as they should be used? \u00a0As he intended me to use them?\u201d<\/p>\n

When I was very young, I broke my arm trying a bicycle trick. \u00a0When I was a teenager, I broke my arm attempting a motorcycle trick. \u00a0I wasn\u2019t really near death, but it occurred to me that I could have been \u2014 and that those on the other side might not have been particularly happy to see me. \u00a0\u201cYou weren\u2019t supposed to be here for another sixty-seven years.\u201d \u00a0\u201cYou threw your life away doing what?<\/em>\u201d \u201cDid you really imagine, you idiot,\u00a0that that\u2019s<\/em> what you were sent there to do?\u201c<\/em>) \u00a0It struck me that perhaps I should try to be a bit more responsible.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
