John 12:12-19<\/a><\/p>\nCompare Matthew 21:14-16<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
All four New Testament gospels \u2014 the three synoptics and John \u2014 mention the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. \u00a0It\u2019s commemorated throughout much of Christendom on \u201cPalm Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Two observations:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
1) \u00a0This event essentially forced the confrontation that would soon follow between Jesus and the rulers of Jerusalem. \u00a0They saw him as a menace to the fragile status quo.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
2) \u00a0Contrast the acclaim of the mob with the\u00a0trial and public abandonment (\u201cCrucify him!\u201d) that would occur within the week<\/em>. \u00a0Easter Sunday is only a seven days away; the Passover, the arrest, the trial, and the crucifixion will intervene. \u00a0Plainly, popular acclaim is fickle.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
