I posted an item about this curious study several months ago, as I recall. \u00a0But Charles Steinman reminds me of it, and probably quite a number of you haven\u2019t seen it:<\/p>\n

Famously, an\u00a0Israeli official once asked an interesting question during the period of the construction of BYU\u2019s Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies, when there was great concern that we Mormons \u2014 who, for some mysterious reason, had the reputation of a proselytizing faith \u2014 would use it as a base for converting Jews. \u00a0The Church and the University had entered into formal promises that we would not do missionary work in Israel. \u00a0But still, he asked, \u201cWhat are we going to do about the light in your students\u2019 eyes?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

And his perception isn\u2019t pure fantasy, whatever else it might be. \u00a0Several times, I myself have picked people out on the street in Jerusalem and wondered whether I would see them in church that weekend. \u00a0And, time after time, I have. \u00a0What exactly I was seeing, I can\u2019t really say. \u00a0Surely it wasn\u2019t merely that they were often (though not always) Americans. \u00a0There are plenty<\/em> of American tourists in Israel at any given time. \u00a0And most of them, by a long shot, aren\u2019t Mormons. \u00a0No, it was something else. \u00a0But I admit that I\u2019ve never thought of glowing skin.<\/p>\n
