The eminent American astronomer Allan Sandage\u00a0(1926\u20132010) worked for many years at the Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena, California, and lived in the nearby town of San Gabriel, only a few blocks from the house in which I grew up. \u00a0One of my great disappointments is that I learned this only very shortly before he died, and that, consequently, I was never able to meet him.\u00a0\u00a0Dr. Sandage<\/span>\u00a0determined the first reasonably accurate values for the\u00a0<\/span>Hubble constant<\/a>\u00a0and for the\u00a0<\/span>age of the universe<\/a>. \u00a0He also discovered the first\u00a0<\/span>quasar<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Responding to the question \u201cCan a person be a scientist and also a Christian?\u201d he said, \u201c\u201cYes. The world is too complicated in all its parts and interconnections to be due to chance alone. I am convinced that the existence of life with all its order in each of its organisms is simply too well put together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
