The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and will reveal myself to him.\u201d \u00a0(John 14:15, 21)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\n<\/p><p style=\"color: #000000;\">There is, as I\u2019ve noted before, little if anything to support a teaching of salvation by grace alone, without works, in the four New Testament gospels.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In John 14:16, the Savior promises his disciples that he will send them \u201canother comforter\u201d \u2014 or, alternatively, another \u201cadvocate\u201d or \u201ccounselor\u201d or \u201chelper\u201d \u2014 after his departure.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Greek word is <em>parakl\u00eatos<\/em> (<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c4\u03bf<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u03c2, often Anglicized as <em>Paraclete<\/em>). \u00a0Etymologically, it means something like \u201ccalled to one\u2019s side.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It has traditionally and very commonly been taken to refer to the coming of the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit \u2014 and the events of Pentecost (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/acts\/2.1-6?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Acts 2:1-6<\/a>) have usually been understood as representing the prophecy\u2019s fulfillment.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, a\u00a0very old Muslim argument \u2014 it goes\u00a0back at least to\u00a0Ibn Ishaq, the eighth-century biographer of \u00a0Muhammad, who\u00a0seems to have had a Christian\u00a0grandfather \u2014 has seen this passage as a prophecy of the coming of the Prophet-Founder of Islam.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The argument is based upon Qur\u2019an 61:6, which reads (in my translation) as follows:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u201cAnd when Jesus, son of Mary, said \u2018O children of Israel, truly I am a messenger of God unto you, confirming what came before me of the Torah, bringing good news of a messenger after me whose name shall be Ahmad [<span dir=\"rtl\" lang=\"ar\" xml:lang=\"ar\">\u0623\u062d\u0645\u062f<\/span>\u200e].'\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Ahmad<\/em> [<span dir=\"rtl\" lang=\"ar\" style=\"color: #252525;\" xml:lang=\"ar\">\u0623\u062d\u0645\u062f<\/span><span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u200e<\/span>] comes from the same root [<span dir=\"rtl\" lang=\"ar\" style=\"color: #252525;\" xml:lang=\"ar\">\u062d\u0645\u062f<\/span><span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u200e; <em>hmd<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #252525;\">] as <em>Muhammad<\/em> [<span dir=\"rtl\" lang=\"ar\" xml:lang=\"ar\">\u0645\u062d\u0645\u062f<\/span>\u200e], a root conveying the notion of \u201cpraise,\u201d and the Qur\u2019anic passage immediately above plainly treats the two names as equivalents, with both meaning roughly \u201cpraiseworthy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"word-font text-right\" style=\"font-weight: 500; color: #000000;\" data-reactid=\".1eylxlbmx34.0.1.2.0.0.2.$61-6-ayah.1.0\"><\/h1>\n<p>The text of John 14:16, the argument sometimes continues, has been corrupted. \u00a0The word\u00a0<em>parakl\u00eatos\u00a0<\/em>should actually read <em>periklytos<\/em>, a hypothesized Greek term that doesn\u2019t appear in either the Greek New Testament or the ancient Septuagint Greek rendition of the Old Testament but that would, if it did, mean \u201cfamed,\u201d \u201cillustrious,\u201d or even . . . \u201cpraiseworthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 John 14:15-26 \u00a0 1. \u00a0 \u201cIf you love me, you will obey my commandments. . . . \u00a0\u00a0The person who has my commandments and obeys them is the one who loves me.
