Being hated for your religious beliefs and practices doesn\u2019t prove them correct. \u00a0If that were the case, ISIS and the Westboro Baptist Church would have good claims to truth and legitimacy.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

But, overall, if the world at large\u00a0loves<\/em> your religious beliefs and practices, that\u2019s apparently pretty good evidence that you\u2019re wrong \u2014\u00a0<\/em>and powerful\u00a0reason to be concerned.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Latter-day Saints shouldn\u2019t be surprised or particularly upset\u00a0that their faith is an object of mockery, hatred, and hostility. \u00a0(See Brian Hales\u2019s very appropriate recent comment \u2014 or even listen<\/em> to it \u2014\u00a0here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

If anything, as I\u2019ve recently written<\/a>, the seemingly increasing animosity that the Church faces from\u00a0elite opinion and from those among\u00a0its own members who align themselves with that elite opinion represents a return to the normal state of things after the aberration of a relatively peaceful era of \u201ctruce\u201d\u00a0between Mormonism<\/a> and American civil religion\u00a0that extended, say, from about 1945 to roughly 1995 or 2000 or so.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I taught a Gospel Doctrine lesson today that focused largely on 1-2 Peter, in which the author seeks to fortify and encourage the Saints of ancient Anatolia in the face of the persecution, contempt, and opposition that they\u2019re experiencing \u2014 and in the face of the internal dissent that\u2019s coming to them. \u00a0Perfect texts for the reflection of contemporary Latter-day Saints.<\/p>\n
