The Garden of Gethsemane isn\u2019t and wasn\u2019t a garden in the sense familiar to most Europeans and North Americans. \u00a0That is, it featured neither carrots, cherry tomatoes, and lettuce, \u00a0nor different varieties of roses. \u00a0It probably wasn\u2019t very green. \u00a0It was (and is) an olive orchard. \u00a0And it was probably a favorite place of the Savior\u2019s because the most obvious, reasonable, and natural road from Bethany (where he stayed with friends while in Judea in order to save money) over the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem and back runs right past or through it.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jesus is described as being \u201cvery sorrowful, even unto death,\u201d and so forth. \u00a0And he had good reason to be. \u00a0He was headed, as he well knew, to crucifixion, an unusually horrible way to die. \u00a0And he was, in some sense incomprehensible to us, beginning already to take upon himself our sins, failings, and sorrows.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. \u00a0<\/span>Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the\u00a0Lord<\/span>\u00a0hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.\u00a0<\/span>He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. \u00a0(Isaiah 53:3-7)<\/span><\/p>\n

Only Luke 22:44 mentions the phenomenon of Christ\u2019s bloody, agonized sweat. \u00a0Traditionally, Luke has been identified as a physician. \u00a0One might hypothesize that this is the kind of detail that would capture his attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe brook Cedron\u201d \u2014 or, as other versions render it, \u201cthe Kidron Valley\u201d \u2014 isn\u2019t a bubbling little English brook or alpine rivulet. \u00a0It\u2019s more like a gulch. \u00a0Today it\u2019s overlooked by BYU\u2019s Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies.<\/p>\n
