Mostly, I hear the name of the contemptible San Bernardino murderess Tashfeen Malik given as Tash-FEEN Ma-LEEK<\/em>, though I\u2019ve sometimes even heard it pronounced Taf-SHEEN Ma-LEEK<\/em>. \u00a0(Which reminds me of the old joke about the agnostic insomniac dyslexic who lies awake at night, wondering if there\u2019s a Dog.)<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been puzzled about this pronunciation, wishing that I could see the original Arabic-script writing of the name.<\/p>\n

I think I may have found it.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

If I\u2019m correct, it\u2019s\u00a0\u062a\u0627\u0634\u0641\u064a\u0646 \u0645\u0644\u0643<\/span>. \u00a0Which would mean, as I suspected, that the proper pronunciation is Tash-FEEN MA-lik<\/em> or, if you prefer, Tash-FEEN MAA-lik<\/em>. \u00a0(You get the rough idea.)<\/p>\n

So now you can pronounce her name better than a news anchor!<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s an interesting part. \u00a0It may not actually be her name at all<\/em> \u2014 which might explain why her background has proven difficult to trace. \u00a0Tashfeen Malik<\/em> may actually have been an assumed name, a nom de guerre<\/em>. \u00a0And only a partial one, even at that.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I usually find Walid Shoebat far too extreme and unnuanced for my tastes, but his proposed link between the woman who called herself \u201cTashfeen Malik\u201d and the eleventh-century Moorish warrior and prince Yusuf b. Tashfin (or Yusuf b. Tashfeen,\u00a0\u064a\u0648\u0633\u0641 \u0628\u0646 \u062a\u0627\u0634\u0641\u064a\u0646\u00a0<\/span>) may be quite significant. \u00a0See his discussion here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Shoebat thinks that her adopted name may come from the Arabic phrase \u062a\u0627\u0634\u0641\u064a\u0646 \u0645\u0644\u0643 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0648\u062d\u062f\u064a\u0646<\/span>\u00a0(tashfeen malik al-muwahhideen<\/em>), which means \u201cTashfeen [or Tashfin], king of the unitarians [those who teach the oneness of God].\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

That would suggest that the supposed name Tashfeen Malik<\/em> is incomplete, which would certainly cause a problem for finding information about her past \u2014 if it\u2019s even her real name, which it may not be.<\/p>\n

I trust that the FBI is aware of this. \u00a0Should I be so trusting?<\/p>\n
