\u00a0<\/p>\n
Why did Jesus make no defense? \u00a0Why did he say so little before Pilate?<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Because he would go to his death without resistance. \u00a0He would no more defend himself verbally than he had defended himself physically, even though, as he pointed out at his arrest, he could have called upon legions of angels to protect him.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cTo this end was I born,\u201d he says at John 18:37, \u201cand for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth [\u1f35\u03bd\u03b1 \u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03ae\u03c3\u03c9 \u03c4\u1fc7 \u1f00\u03bb\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u03af\u1fb3].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Greek verb\u00a0\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03ae\u03c3\u03c9 (martyr\u00eas\u00f4,\u00a0<\/em>\u201c[that] I bear witness\u201d) contains an obvious secondary hint of martyrdom. \u00a0In the words of the Christmas carol, <\/span>\u201cJesus the Saviour did come for to die\u00a0f<\/b>or poor on\u2019ry people like you and like I.\u201d \u00a0That was the whole point.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
