Cuban missile crisis<\/a>\u00a0of October 1962, when \u2014 and I still have vivid childhood memories of this \u2014 the world seemed to be within hours\u00a0of a nuclear war between John F. Kennedy\u2019s\u00a0United States and Nikita Krushchev\u2019s\u00a0Soviet Union. \u00a0It was written as a plea for peace, and that can clearly be heard in the words.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
The lyrics of the song are constructed somewhat like a game of \u201ctelephone,\u201d with the news of Christ\u2019s birth being related by the night wind to a lamb, by the lamb to a shepherd boy, by the shepherd boy to a king, and by the king to people everywhere. \u00a0At each level, the nature of the message changes somewhat, becoming more specifically focused on Christ.<\/p>\n
