He wouldn\u2019t be starting from zero.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

It seems highly improbable. \u00a0And my guess is that some of the Tea Party types would bolt the Party if, at a brokered convention, Romney became the 2016 nominee. \u00a0Some would rather go down to electoral defeat and hand the presidency to Hillary Clinton than support someone they see as a \u201cRINO.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

And Governor Romney himself has\u00a0shown no visible enthusiasm for the idea. \u00a0Quite the contrary.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the demagogic, unconservative, and increasingly sinister Donald Trump continues to ride high in the polls \u2014 without, however, drawing anywhere close to 50% support \u2014 while other candidates struggle to stay alive. \u00a0Those who don\u2019t like Mr. Trump, including yours truly, really<\/em> don\u2019t like him, and I think that, if nominated, he would probably lead the Republican Party to devastating electoral ruin.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Suppose, though, that he continues as the polling leader all the way to the convention in Cleveland, but without enough delegates to seal the deal. \u00a0What then?<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Consider this insightful piece from the indispensable journal of political thought and current events The Onion<\/em>:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mitt Romney has almost universal name recognition, a fundraising network already in place, and abundant experience as a candidate. \u00a0He could, thus, become a national candidate on short notice, which anybody chosen unexpectedly at the convention would need to do. \u00a0There have been some polls showing national buyer\u2019s remorse regarding the country\u2019s 2012 decision to reelect Barack Obama. \u00a0And, moreover, Mitt Romney is\u00a0an adult.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

So the idea continues to be mentioned occasionally<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ironically, by the way, it\u2019s been suggested that Governor Romney was warned off from a bid for the 2016 nomination by intimidation from the mighty Bush machine<\/a> \u2014 but Jeb Bush seems to be a dead man walking.<\/p>\n
