But I have to admit to a fondness for the now-retired BYU English professor \u2014 what other career option did he ever really have? \u2014 named William Shakespeare. \u00a0I used to see his car in the faculty parking lot; it featured a Utah license plate that read The Bard<\/em>. \u00a0He was even well-known in England: \u00a0Several years ago, my wife and I were touring the home of the other<\/em> Shakespeare, in Stratford-upon-Avon. \u00a0Upon finding out that we were from Utah, and that I taught at BYU, he immediately asked whether I knew \u201cBill Shakespeare.\u201d<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Imagine yourself checking in at a motel. \u00a0The clerk asks your name, and you respond \u201cWilliam Shakespeare.\u201d \u00a0Would any clerk actually believe<\/em> that? \u00a0Wouldn\u2019t she glance from you to your purported \u201cwife\u201d and think \u201cSure it is, you philandering low life.\u201d<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
(My apologies to Bill Shakespeare, in case he reads this. \u00a0But surely he\u2019s acutely aware of the, umm, unexpectedness of his name.)<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
And what do you imagine the reaction would be if you identified yourself as \u201cDr. Gay Hitler,\u201d or \u201cDr. Taco B. M. Monster\u201d?<\/p>\n
