24:13-35<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Compare Mark 16:12-13<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This wonderful story occurs only in the gospel of Luke, although Mark plainly alludes to it.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Three\u00a0brief observations:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jesus is the same and yet, somehow, subtly different, so that his identity isn\u2019t at first apparent to the two disciples walking with him toward Emmaus. \u00a0This may be the point of an expression in Mark 16:12, which says that \u201che appeared in another form [<span class=\"greek-hebrew\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\u1f10\u03bd<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"greek-hebrew\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\u1f11\u03c4\u03ad\u03c1\u1fb3<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"greek-hebrew\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\u03bc\u03bf\u03c1\u03c6\u1fc7].\u201d \u00a0That phrase\u00a0serves no apparent\u00a0purpose in the Markan account but makes perfect sense in view of the Lukan narrative. \u00a0My bet is that oral accounts of what Luke records were relatively widely known in the early Christian community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An alternative understanding might be that he looked essentially the same, but that, through supernatural means, the two disciples were prevented from knowing him. \u00a0Luke 24:16 says that \u201ctheir eyes were kept from recognizing him\u201d (<span style=\"color: #001320;\">\u03bf\u1f31 \u03b4\u1f72 \u1f40\u03c6\u03b8\u03b1\u03bb\u03bc\u03bf\u1f76 \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd \u1f10\u03ba\u03c1\u03b1\u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6\u03bd\u03c4\u03bf \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03bc\u1f74 \u1f10\u03c0\u03b9\u03b3\u03bd\u1ff6\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9 \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03cc\u03bd). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure that the two explanations are incompatible. \u00a0And, certainly, there were things about Christ\u2019s resurrected body that were different from his mortal state (e.g., being able to \u201cmaterialize\u201d suddenly and in enclosed spaces, being able to pass through walls, etc.). \u00a0So why should it be presumed that the resurrected body <em>looked<\/em> the same?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When the two disciples finally realized the identity of their guest, they faulted themselves for not having recognized him earlier. \u00a0\u201cDid not our hearts burn within us,\u201d they said (Luke 24:32), \u201cwhile he talked with us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?\u201d (<span style=\"color: #001320;\">\u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u03b5\u1f36\u03c0\u03b1\u03bd \u03c0\u03c1\u1f78\u03c2 \u1f00\u03bb\u03bb\u03ae\u03bb\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2 \u039f\u1f50\u03c7\u1f76 \u1f21 \u03ba\u03b1\u03c1\u03b4\u03af\u03b1 \u1f21\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b7 \u1f26\u03bd \u1f10\u03bd \u1f21\u03bc\u1fd6\u03bd, \u1f61\u03c2 \u1f10\u03bb\u03ac\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9 \u1f21\u03bc\u1fd6\u03bd \u1f10\u03bd \u03c4\u1fc7 \u1f41\u03b4\u1ff7, \u1f61\u03c2 \u03b4\u03b9\u03ae\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b3\u03b5\u03bd \u1f21\u03bc\u1fd6\u03bd \u03c4\u1f70\u03c2 \u03b3\u03c1\u03b1\u03c6\u03ac\u03c2;)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Latter-day Saints are often mocked \u2014 and not merely by secularists, but often by professing Christians \u2014 for believing and teaching that the Spirit can help us to recognize divine truth via a \u201cburning in the bosom.\u201d \u00a0(See, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/dc-testament\/dc\/9?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Doctrine and Covenants 9<\/a>.) \u00a0But isn\u2019t that exactly what\u2019s presumed in this New Testament story, as well?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The location of Emmaus is unknown.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Latter-day Saints are often derided for their belief in the Book of Mormon. \u00a0Biblical sites are known, we\u2019re told, and biblical archaeology is clear, unlike the situation with the Book of Mormon. \u00a0But this isn\u2019t true: \u00a0Emmaus is just one of many instances where the site of a biblical place remains disputed, and there is no archaeological
