The gospel of Matthew ends with the so-called \u201cGreat Commission\u201d: \u00a0\u201cGo therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The emphasis is on worldwide proselytizing (check!) and on preaching obedience to Christ\u2019s commandments (check!). \u00a0Not a whiff of salvation by grace alone.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The gospel of Mark has occasioned some considerable debate at this point, because the surviving manuscripts contain two different endings. \u00a0The \u201cshorter ending,\u201d which follows immediately upon the familiar \u00a0Mark 16:1-8<\/a>, reads as follows: \u00a0\u201cBut they reported briefly to Peter and those with him all that they had been told. \u00a0And after this, Jesus himself sent out by means of them, from east to west, the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The \u201clonger ending,\u201d however \u2014 which is the familiar ending that\u2019s contained in the LDS version and essentially\u00a0all other versions of the New Testament \u2014 contains another form of the \u201cgreat commission,\u201d as well as accounts of several post-resurrection appearances by the Lord.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The gospel of Luke concludes with a brief description of Christ\u2019s ascension, but it also alludes to something like the \u201cgreat commission.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The gospel of John, as I\u2019ve recently observed<\/a>, closes with a candid admission that it has omitted many things that could have been said about Jesus. \u00a0However, it explains that there has been a conscious principle of selection at work: \u00a0\u201cNow Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

In other words, John doesn\u2019t claim to be writing a modern academic biography. \u00a0He\u2019s writing \u201cfaithful history.\u201d \u00a0And the same can surely be said of the other gospel writers, as well. \u00a0Their coverage of Jesus\u2019 childhood, youth, and early manhood is, at best, sparse. \u00a0They never tell us what he looked like nor how he dressed. \u00a0They say nothing of his early education. \u00a0They fail to tell us many of the things that a modern biographer would want to know. \u00a0In this regard, the Joseph Smith Translation\u2019s labeling of the four gospels as \u201cThe Testimony<\/em> of Matthew,\u201d\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0Testimony<\/em>\u00a0of Mark,\u201d\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0Testimony<\/em>\u00a0of Luke,\u201d and \u201c\u201dThe\u00a0Testimony<\/em>\u00a0of John\u201d seems to me profoundly insightful.<\/p>\n
