We had the privilege of attending a very good funeral today \u2014 yes, a funeral can be \u201cgood,\u201d in a way \u2014 for our dear friend Robert Cundick<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

A grandson read the family-written obituary, which I commend to anybody who might be interested:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The music, as you might have expected, was wonderful: \u00a0The prelude and postlude were\u00a0played by Richard Elliott<\/a> (including an organ version of \u201cHe is the Root and the Offspring of David,\u201d<\/a> from Brother Cundick\u2019s The Redeemer<\/em>).<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

John Longhurst<\/a> accompanied the singing during the service, most of which was performed by a sizable group of current and former members of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, conducted by Jerold Ottley<\/a>. \u00a0They sang Brother Cundick\u2019s \u201cOur God is a God of Love,\u201d<\/a> with lyrics by Delbert L. Stapley, who served as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles from 1950 until his death in 1978:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Our God is a God of love.<\/p>\n

Love is his greatest gift to us.<\/p>\n

Love is our greatest gift to him.<\/p>\n

To love is eternal.<\/p>\n

To love is infinite. . . .<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

They also sang a beautiful choral piece from The Redeemer<\/em>, based on a text from the Book of Mormon, titled\u00a0\u201cAnd What Is It We Shall Hope For?\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

And what is it we shall hope for?<\/span>
\nWe have hope through the atonement of Christ<\/span>
\nAnd the power of His resurrection,<\/span>
\nTo be raised unto life eternal.<\/span><\/p>\n

We shall pray unto the Father with all the energy of our hearts,<\/span>
\nThat we may be filled with His love,<\/span>
\nWhich He has bestowed on us who are true followers of the Lord, Jesus\u00a0Christ.<\/span>
\nThat we may become the sons and daughters of God;<\/span><\/p>\n

That when He shall appear, we shall be like Him;<\/span>
\nFor we shall see Him as He is!<\/span>
\nThat we may have this hope,<\/span>
\nThat we may be purified even as He is pure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amen.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the conclusion of the service, Brother Ottley led the very large congregation in \u201cGod Be With You \u2018Til We Meet Again,\u201d so that I can now truthfully say that I\u2019ve sung under Dr. Jerold Ottley \u2014 twice, in fact: once today and once when I spoke to an assembly at BYU Hawaii while he was teaching there after his retirement from the Tabernacle Choir. \u00a0Brother Longhurst also played Robert Cundick\u2019s piece for solo organ entitled \u201cPrelude on a Swedish Folk Song.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Three of Bob\u2019s sons gave spoken reminiscences of and tributes to their father, and all three did an excellent job. \u00a0The ward bishop spoke as well, and the concluding speaker was President Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who came accompanied by\u00a0Elder Ulisses Soares of the Presidency of the Seventy and who, among other things, read a letter of tribute and condolence from the First Presidency.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I was also very pleased, I must confess, when one of the sons suggested that members of the congregation could read Brother Cundick\u2019s testimony<\/a> at Mormon Scholars Testify.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Robert Cundick led a good, humble, kindly, devoted, productive, creative, and faithful life. \u00a0We were privileged to be there at his funeral, and we were inspired by it.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n
