In today\u2019s reading,\u00a02 Nephi 8<\/a>\u00a0(= Isaiah 51-52:1-2), Jacob continues to cite the writings of the prophet Isaiah.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I would like to focus, very briefly, upon one verse, 2 Nephi 8:6:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLift up your eyes to the\u00a0<\/span>heavens<\/span>, and look upon the earth beneath; for the heavens shall\u00a0<\/span>vanish<\/span>\u00a0away like smoke, and the earth shall\u00a0<\/span>wax old<\/span>\u00a0like a garment; and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner. But my salvation shall be forever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been working intermittently\u00a0on a book manuscript about the Qur\u2019an\u2019s view of the physical cosmos: how it came to be, how it\u2019s presently configured or structured, and what it can tell us about God, independently of revelation.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Qur\u2019an is replete with statements remarkably similar to this one, as are the four scriptural standard works of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The point of them is to show that the things we normally count on \u2014 the firmness and stability of \u201csolid ground,\u201d for example \u2014 aren\u2019t really stable or reliable at all. \u00a0(Those who\u2019ve experienced significant earthquakes can verify that one of the many unnerving aspects of such events is the fact that what has always seemed immoveable suddenly begins to move.)<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

When all else passes away, the prophets of the Abrahamic tradition have consistently taught, the word of the Lord will remain. \u00a0It\u2019s the one thing that we can rely on. \u00a0Family members may disappoint us, false friends may betray us, even true friends may let us down. \u00a0Church leaders will be, as they\u2019ve always been, human and fallible. \u00a0Political leaders will be political. \u00a0At the very least, even the best and greatest of them will grow old and die. \u00a0But the word of the Lord endureth forever, and his promises are sure. \u00a0We may violate our covenants with him, but he\u2019ll never violate his covenants with us.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n
