Many people in the interior American West are instinctively conservative. \u00a0One of the issues that sometimes exercise them is the intrusive role of the federal government in their lives. \u00a0For years, for example, legislators and bureaucrats from\u00a0the heavily populated East set slow speed limits for highways in the sparsely populated western states. \u00a0And, of course, the federales<\/em> either own or control vast areas of the American West.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Some in the West no doubt see Donald Trump as their champion.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
They like his irreverence toward the \u201cEstablishment,\u201d the way he seems to speak his mind, his independence. \u00a0It appeals to their sense of themselves as heirs to the free culture of America\u2019s frontier.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
On this issue, though, he clearly isn\u2019t\u00a0<\/em>on their side. \u00a0He\u2019s an east coast liberal.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
You see, he doesn\u2019t trust<\/em> the states. \u00a0He doesn\u2019t believe that they\u2019re capable of governing themselves.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
It\u2019s long been apparent that he\u2019s something of an aspiring caudillo<\/em>, with little or no respect for the Constitution or its vital principle of the separation of powers. \u00a0And it\u2019s now clear that he\u2019s not a really big advocate of federalism, either. \u00a0He would further concentrate power in Washington DC, and specifically in the White House.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Americans who believe in limited government should be extremely wary of Mr. Trump. \u00a0Westerners, in particular, should think long and hard before giving him their support.<\/p>\n
