charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13616\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13616\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2014\/10\/35666_all_004_05.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13616\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2014\/10\/35666_all_004_05.jpg\" alt=\"Lehi sermonizing at Jerusalem\" width=\"450\" height=\"325\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13616\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lehi\u2019s preaching, like Jeremiah\u2019s won him few friends in Jerusalem. \u00a0(LDS.org)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A few brief notes on\u00a0today\u2019s reading, which is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/2-ne\/10?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">2 Nephi 10<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Especially if one views of the Book of Mormon as a modern production, and especially in the light of the horrific treatment of Jews that has repeatedly scarred human history during the years intervening since 1830, it would be easy to suspect that\u00a02 Nephi 10:3 is an expression of antisemitism when it refers to \u201c<span style=\"color: #2f393a;\">the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #2f393a;\">Jews<\/span><span style=\"color: #2f393a;\">, . . .\u00a0those who are the more wicked part of the world,\u201d\u00a0who\u00a0\u201cshall\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #2f393a;\">crucify\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #2f393a;\">him\u2014for . . .\u00a0there is none other nation on earth that would\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #2f393a;\">crucify<\/span><span style=\"color: #2f393a;\">\u00a0their\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #2f393a;\">God<\/span><span style=\"color: #2f393a;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But, as a matter of fact, the Book of Mormon is expressly\u00a0<em>anti<\/em>-antisemitic. \u00a0Indeed, I can think of no other canonical scripture in any religious tradition, other than the Book of Mormon, that explicitly condemns bigotry against Jews. \u00a0(See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mormoninterpreter.com\/what-thank-they-the-jews-2-nephi-294-a-note-on-the-name-judah-and-antisemitism\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So what is going on?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s assume, for purposes of discussion, what I actually believe to be the case<em>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/em>that the Book of Mormon recounts true history, and that Jacob was a real, historical person.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Remember that the Jewish leadership\u00a0of Jerusalem had, by their incompetent and even evil leadership, brought destruction upon the city from which Jacob\u2019s family came. and that \u201cthe Jews\u201d there had sought to murder Jacob\u2019s father. \u00a0Jacob had, no doubt, been raised on and surrounded by passionate opposition to the leadership, ethos, and culture of late pre-exilic Judah, and he himself had been raised in exile, deprived of the wealth, status, and comfort that would otherwise have been his.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s scarcely any wonder that Jacob has no warm feelings toward \u201cthe Jews\u201d at Jerusalem, and even that he\u2019s inclined to hyperbolic statements about their being the most evil people on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 A few brief notes on\u00a0today\u2019s reading, which is\u00a02 Nephi 10. \u00a0 Especially if one views of the Book of Mormon as a modern production, and especially in the light of the horrific treatment of Jews that has repeatedly scarred human history during the years intervening since 1830, it would be easy to [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1019,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-30437","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>BOM 2 Nephi 10<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"&nbsp;
