I can\u2019t really speak to the specific merits of the protest in which he and others engaged, nor can I comment on the circumstances of his death. \u00a0I expect and trust that there will be an investigation.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll say this, though:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
When, as they often do, our inner cities erupt in violence against the police, shopkeepers, and others, prominent voices in the media regularly exhort us to try to sympathetically understand where the violence comes from. \u00a0What are the grievances of those who are pillaging stores and attacking law enforcement?<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
That\u2019s probably not altogether bad advice, though it often\u00a0seems to me an attempt to excuse merely criminal behavior. \u00a0There\u2019s no doubt, though, that family, political, and social pathologies are at work in such cases, and that they need urgent attention.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
It would be appropriate, however, if those same voices could encourage Americans\u00a0to make a sympathetic attempt to understand what grievances, real or perceived, led a devout 55-year-old rancher and foster father of eleven children (with others of similar backgrounds) to undertake a protest that had not turned\u00a0violent until the encounter in which, sadly, he died.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
I\u2019m saddened by this story because I know men who, I\u2019m guessing, are not very different from\u00a0Robert LaVoy Finicum. \u00a0Men from the same general area. \u00a0I like them. \u00a0I\u2019m related to several of them. \u00a0They\u2019re good, solid, salt-of-the-earth, self-reliant, productive, dependable, patriotic. \u00a0When I saw photos of LaVoy Finicum, I could imagine his voice. \u00a0I\u2019ve heard such voices all my life. \u00a0And, as it happens, I\u2019ve seen comments from people whom I know who knew him<\/em>, and who report him to have been\u00a0a good and kind man.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
This is deeply, deeply sad.<\/p>\n
