charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30900\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30900\" style=\"width: 315px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/02\/kona-hawaii-temple-lds-1072801-gallery.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30900\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/02\/kona-hawaii-temple-lds-1072801-gallery.jpg\" alt=\"Hawaii's temple #2\" width=\"315\" height=\"447\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30900\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Kona Hawaii Temple<br>Hawaii\u2019s second, is located on the Big Island<br>(lds.org)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In today\u2019s reading,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/2-ne\/25?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">2 Nephi 25<\/a>, the prophet Nephi returns to speaking in his own voice \u2014 and it\u2019s a voice very distinct from Isaiah\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Four brief observations:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In verses 1-7, Nephi explicitly contrasts his own approach with that of Isaiah, indicating that there was an Old World Jewish method of understanding prophecy \u2014 a typological approach, perhaps, or a particular style of poetic analysis? \u2014 that he had intentionally decided not to pass on to his own separated people, and that his method would be clearer, plainer.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It seems evident\u00a0(for example, from verse 15) that Nephi understood Isaiah to have been speaking about the destruction of the literal, historical, ancient Babylon, and not\u00a0<em>merely<\/em>\u00a0about the figurative Babylon (the evil, fallen world) of the latter days.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I cannot see how anybody can read verse 26 and conclude, with even a shred of plausibility, that those who believe in\u00a0the Book of Mormon as scripture aren\u2019t Christians:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">And we\u00a0talk\u00a0of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we\u00a0prophesy\u00a0of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our\u00a0children\u00a0may know to what source they may look for a\u00a0remission\u00a0of their sins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It also baffles me that anybody (including, astonishingly, some Latter-day Saints!) can read verse 23 and allege that Latter-day Saints don\u2019t believe in salvation by grace<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">For we labor diligently to write, to\u00a0persuade\u00a0our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God;
