Jacob 1<\/a>, the torch is passed. \u00a0Not quite to a new generation, but to Nephi\u2019s younger brothers, Jacob and Joseph. \u00a0They had never known Jerusalem, but had been\u00a0born during the journey down the Arabian coast to the New World.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
There is a division, at the death of Nephi, between the secular government, which is granted to one line of men, and spiritual leadership, which continues within the family of Lehi. \u00a0Whereas Nephi had exercised both secular political and religious functions, there is now a separation between the two.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The political successors to Nephi are given the title of \u201cNephi,\u201d much as, in the secular history of the Old World, successors to Julius and Augustus Caesar \u2014 at first members of the family, but later quite unrelated \u2014 continued to bear the title of\u00a0Caesar<\/em>\u00a0(and, eventually, of\u00a0Kaiser<\/em>\u00a0and of\u00a0Czar<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Tsar<\/em>\u00a0[\u0446a\u0440\u044c]).<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
