Just a couple of quick notes about today\u2019s reading,\u00a0Jacob 6<\/a>:<\/p>\n

First of all, it seems at the end of this chapter that Jacob may have assumed that\u00a0he was done. \u00a0He offers a solemn farewell in verse 13 that is reminiscent of Nephi\u2019s leave-taking in\u00a02 Nephi 33:13-15<\/a>\u00a0and of Moroni\u2019s final goodbye in\u00a0Moroni 10: 34<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Finally, I bid you farewell, until I shall meet you before the\u00a0pleasing\u00a0bar of God, which bar striketh the wicked with\u00a0awful\u00a0dread and fear. Amen.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

He may have been surprised to still be around for Jacob 7.<\/p>\n

Incidentally, Professor Royal Skousen has argued that\u00a0pleasing bar<\/em>, here and in\u00a0Moroni 10:34<\/a>, should actually read\u00a0plead<\/strong>ing bar<\/em>. \u00a0It\u2019s an intriguing suggestion. \u00a0(Pleasing<\/em>\u00a0certainly doesn\u2019t seem to accord neatly with\u00a0awful dread and fear<\/em>!) \u00a0See his discussion at pages 397-402\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Please understand, too, that the question that Jacob\u00a0asks in verse six isn\u2019t \u201cwhy are you going to die?\u201d but, really, \u201cwhy are you\u00a0choosing<\/em>\u00a0to die?\u201d \u00a0The verb\u00a0will<\/em>\u00a0here isn\u2019t merely a future tense of the verb\u00a0to be<\/em>\u00a0but is a verbal form of the noun\u00a0will<\/em>, as in\u00a0to will something to happen<\/em>. \u00a0This is self-evident to me, but, just for fun, I\u2019ve now checked two translations of the Book of Mormon, and they agree: \u00a0The German has\u00a0denn warum wollt ihr\u00a0sterben?<\/em>\u00a0(wollt<\/em>\u00a0being a conjugated form of the infinitive verb\u00a0willen<\/em>) and the Spanish has\u00a0\u00bfpor que quer\u00e8is morir?<\/em><\/p>\n
