Dan, I thought you\u2019d be interested to know what I found out. I was reading my French Book of Mormon and the word that they used to describe Amalickiah\u2019s \u201cdeception\u201d is tromperie<\/em>, from the verb tromper<\/em>, which means \u201cto deceive\u201d or \u201cto hoodwink.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
I\u2019m reminded of the artistic term\u00a0tromp l\u2019oeil\u00a0<\/em>(French: literally, \u201cdeceive the eye\u201d): \u201cvisual illusion in art, especially as used to trick the eye into perceiving a painted detail as a three-dimensional object.\u201d<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
And I also remember the seldom-used English noun trumpery<\/em>, which means \u201cattractive articles of little value or use\u201d and, as an adjective, \u201cshowy but worthless.\u201d \u00a0\u201cPractices or beliefs that are superficially or visually appealing,\u201d say the Oxford dictionaries, \u201cbut have little real value or worth.\u201d \u00a0I think that the word needs to be dusted off and brought out of semi-retirement.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
