{"id":31521,"date":"2016-03-06T23:55:19","date_gmt":"2016-03-07T06:55:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/?p=31521"},"modified":"2016-03-06T23:55:19","modified_gmt":"2016-03-07T06:55:19","slug":"bom-omni","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2016\/03\/bom-omni.html","title":{"rendered":"BOM Omni"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31522\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31522\" style=\"width: 338px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/03\/mkt_12.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31522\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31522\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/03\/mkt_12.jpg\" alt=\"Teichert Mosiah Omni\" width=\"338\" height=\"227\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31522\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">King Mosiah interprets the Jaredite stone<br>(Minerva Teichert)<br>Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s reading, the (again very short) book of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/omni\/1?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Omni<\/a>, briefly mentions a number of extraordinarily important historical items.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We learn for the first time, for example, about Zarahemla and its people, the Mulekites. \u00a0Mosiah becomes the king of a unified Nephite\/Mulekite state. \u00a0And we hear of the Jaredites, and of their last king, Coriantumr.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I choose, however, to concentrate on something that I find amusing.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jarom, on whom I commented in his role as the author of the preceding book, wrote little. \u00a0But he was a complete chatterbox compared to the multiple authors of the thirty-verse book of Omni.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You might be pardoned, given that roster of authors \u2014 Omni, Amaron, Chemish, Abinadom, and Amaleki \u2014 if you imagine that\u00a0<em>omni<\/em>\u00a0is being used here in the Latin sense of \u201call.\u201d \u00a0But it\u2019s not. \u00a0My suspicion is that\u00a0<em>omni<\/em>\u00a0may be related, in some sense, to the triliteral Semitic root\u00a0<em>\u2019mn,<\/em>\u00a0which pertains to \u201cbelief,\u201d \u201cfaith,\u201d and \u201csafety\u201d or \u201csecurity,\u201d with the first-person singular possessive\u00a0<em>-1<\/em>\u00a0attached. \u00a0(In Arabic,\u00a0<em>amni<\/em>\u00a0means \u201cmy security,\u201d or something to that effect.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Omni, claiming to be\u00a0a wicked man, explicitly says that he\u2019s writing on the plates only to fulfill the commandment of his father that he do so (verse 1). \u00a0And he adds three verses of little value.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Amaron adds only five verses, one of which indicates that he\u2019s passing the plates on to his brother, Chemish.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Amusingly, this is the entirety of Chemish\u2019s entry:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Now I, Chemish, write what few things I write, in the same book with my brother; for behold,\u00a0<em>I saw the last which he wrote<\/em>, that he wrote it with his own hand; and\u00a0<em>he wrote it in the day that he delivered them unto me.<\/em>\u00a0<em>And after this manner we keep the\u00a0<\/em><em>records<\/em>, for it is accordin<i>g\u00a0<\/i>to the commandments of our fathers.
