We learn for the first time, for example, about Zarahemla and its people, the Mulekites. \u00a0Mosiah becomes the king of a unified Nephite\/Mulekite state. \u00a0And we hear of the Jaredites, and of their last king, Coriantumr.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
I choose, however, to concentrate on something that I find amusing.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Jarom, on whom I commented in his role as the author of the preceding book, wrote little. \u00a0But he was a complete chatterbox compared to the multiple authors of the thirty-verse book of Omni.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
You might be pardoned, given that roster of authors \u2014 Omni, Amaron, Chemish, Abinadom, and Amaleki \u2014 if you imagine that\u00a0omni<\/em>\u00a0is being used here in the Latin sense of \u201call.\u201d \u00a0But it\u2019s not. \u00a0My suspicion is that\u00a0omni<\/em>\u00a0may be related, in some sense, to the triliteral Semitic root\u00a0\u2019mn,<\/em>\u00a0which pertains to \u201cbelief,\u201d \u201cfaith,\u201d and \u201csafety\u201d or \u201csecurity,\u201d with the first-person singular possessive\u00a0-1<\/em>\u00a0attached. \u00a0(In Arabic,\u00a0amni<\/em>\u00a0means \u201cmy security,\u201d or something to that effect.)<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Omni, claiming to be\u00a0a wicked man, explicitly says that he\u2019s writing on the plates only to fulfill the commandment of his father that he do so (verse 1). \u00a0And he adds three verses of little value.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Amaron adds only five verses, one of which indicates that he\u2019s passing the plates on to his brother, Chemish.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Amusingly, this is the entirety of Chemish\u2019s entry:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Now I, Chemish, write what few things I write, in the same book with my brother; for behold,\u00a0I saw the last which he wrote<\/em>, that he wrote it with his own hand; and\u00a0he wrote it in the day that he delivered them unto me.<\/em>\u00a0And after this manner we keep the\u00a0<\/em>records<\/em>, for it is according\u00a0<\/i>to the commandments of our fathers. And I make an end. \u00a0(verse 9)<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
I hope that you\u2019re as impressed with the \u201cmanner\u201d in which these remarkably unimpressive stewards of the plates\u00a0\u201ckeep the records\u201d as I am.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Amaleki does a bit better than his predecessors, but, mercifully, his undistinguished and ineffectual line dies out with him and he transfers the plates to King Benjamin. \u00a0And none too soon, either. \u00a0If this sorry group had continued as the custodians of the plates, we wouldn\u2019t have a Book of Mormon.<\/p>\n
