Mosiah 28<\/a>, mentions in passing the launch of the great mission to the Lamanites undertaken by the sons of King Mosiah.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
It will provide some of the greatest and most inspiring stories in the Book of Mormon.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
It will also \u2014 by moving the king\u2019s sons beyond the borders of the kingdom \u2014 oblige Mosiah to consider the question of the royal succession, and, ultimately, to reconsider\u00a0the continuation of the Nephite monarchy itself.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
I\u2019m moved by the description of the sons of Mosiah at 28:3:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cNow they were desirous that salvation should be declared to every creature, for they could not\u00a0bear\u00a0that any human\u00a0soul\u00a0should\u00a0perish; yea, even the very thoughts that any soul should endure\u00a0endless\u00a0torment did cause them to quake and\u00a0tremble.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
This is consistent with what their companion Alma says at Alma 29:1-2:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cO that I were an angel, and could have the wish of mine heart, that I might go forth and speak with the\u00a0trump\u00a0of God, with a voice to shake the earth, and cry repentance unto every people! \u00a0Yea, I would declare unto every soul, as with the voice of thunder, repentance and the plan of redemption, that they should repent and\u00a0come\u00a0unto our God, that there might not be more sorrow upon all the face of the earth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
And it means that\u00a0these servants of God share the outlook of God himself, as that is recorded in Moses 7:28-37:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd it came to pass that the God of heaven looked upon theresidue\u00a0of the people, and he wept; and Enoch bore record of it, saying: How is it that the heavens weep, and shed forth their tears as the rain upon the mountains?<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cAnd Enoch said unto the Lord: How is it that thou canst\u00a0weep, seeing thou art holy, and from all eternity to all eternity? . . .<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cThe Lord said unto Enoch: Behold these thy brethren; they are the workmanship of mine own\u00a0hands . . . \u00a0And unto thy brethren have I said, and also given commandment, that they should\u00a0love\u00a0one another, and that they should choose me, their Father; but behold, they are without affection, and they\u00a0hate\u00a0their own blood . . .\u00a0and misery shall be their doom; and the whole heavens shall weep over them, even all the workmanship of mine hands; wherefore should not the heavens weep, seeing these shall suffer?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n<\/p>
