Peter and Paul in Weimar, Germany. \u00a0(Wikimedia Commons) \u00a0Note the lamb at the foot of the cross.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With today\u2019s reading,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/alma\/1?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Alma 1<\/a>, we enter into the single longest book within the Book of Mormon.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the things that strike me about it is its depiction of persecution, first directed against the Church and its members by apostates but then, inappropriately and unrighteously, returned by Church members against their persecutors.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is a persistent temptation for those who seek to defend the Kingdom, and the contentiousness that it has engendered has essentially ruined many message boards and newspaper comments sections.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Saints must resist the very human urge to return blow for blow. \u00a0We should emulate the Savior, who returned not a word when his executioners tormented and tortured him:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. \u00a0(Isaiah 53:7)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If nothing else, though, we should at least follow the rather cynical advice given at Proverbs 25:21-22:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><span id=\"en-KJV-17135\" class=\"text Prov-25-21\">If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: \u00a0For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0shall reward thee.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\n<\/p><p style=\"color: #000000;\">The same counsel is repeated by the apostle Paul at Romans 2:17-22:<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\n<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><span id=\"en-KJV-28263\" class=\"text Rom-12-17\">Recompense to no man evil for evil.
