For anybody who is interested in the history of Mormonism<\/a> during the second half of the nineteenth century, the beginnings of the Church in Hawaii, the issuing of the Manifesto ending plural marriage, and so forth, this is a really big deal:<\/p>\n

Over the course of\u00a0several years back in the early nineties, I was privileged to have a complete typescript of George Q. Cannon\u2019s journals in my possession. \u00a0Alas, nothing ever emerged into print from that, but I found those journals absolutely fascinating.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

An amusing incident from that period:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

One night, a reading group to which we belonged (and still belong) was meeting in our home. \u00a0It included three prominent Mormon historians (two of them former Assistant Church Historians, all three of them former presidents of the Mormon History<\/a> Association), and, as it happened, a respected\u00a0non-Mormon historian<\/a> (also a former president of the Mormon History Association) had also joined us for the evening.\u00a0\u00a0The journals of Wilford Woodruff had just appeared in print, and, before we actually began, the conversation turned to the question of whose journals they would next<\/em> like to see released. \u00a0Unanimously, they said\u00a0that they would really like to see the journals of George Q. Cannon published.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Originally from Liverpool, George Q. Cannon had served as a counselor to Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, and Lorenzo Snow. \u00a0Beyond that, he had helped to edit the Times and Seasons<\/em> in Nauvoo, worked as a gold miner in California, participated in opening\u00a0the Hawaiian mission, presided over the European mission, founded Deseret Book, edited the Deseret News<\/em>, served as a territorial delegate to the Congress of the United States, and so on and so forth.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I listened silently to my historian friends. \u00a0I couldn\u2019t tell them that a copy of the journals of George Q. Cannon was, at that very moment, about ten feet below them. \u00a0My possession of\u00a0it was confidential. \u00a0(I eventually passed them on to Davis Bitton, who used them for his George Q. Cannon: A Biography<\/a><\/em>.)<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some are confident \u2014 I spoke\u00a0with a few back then who had somehow learned\u00a0that I had the journals \u2014 that such documents contain things that will discredit the Church and its leadership.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

They\u2019re wrong. \u00a0Honestly, I found absolutely nothing in them that would, in my judgment, pose any threat to anybody\u2019s faith. \u00a0Quite the contrary. \u00a0And some passages were rather moving.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I\u2019m delighted that the journals will now be published.<\/p>\n
