Today\u2019s reading,\u00a0Alma 7<\/a>, features the prophecy that the Savior will be \u201cborn of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers\u201d (7:10).<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Generations of anti-Mormons have made merry over this obvious error; anybody familiar with Christmas carols knows that Jesus was born in the \u201clittle town of Bethlehem,\u201d not in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Which pretty obviously means that Joseph Smith knew it, too.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

On a more positive note: \u00a0I especially treasure the explanation of Christ\u2019s incarnation given in this chapter, of how being human taught him to understand our earthly, mortal, fallen condition:<\/p>\n

And he shall go forth, suffering pains and\u00a0afflictions\u00a0and temptations\u00a0of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will\u00a0take upon\u00a0him the pains and the sicknesses of his people. \u00a0And he will take upon him\u00a0death, that he may\u00a0loose\u00a0the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to\u00a0succor his people according to their infirmities.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0(7:11-12)<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/p>

Even the Lord himself couldn\u2019t truly know what it was like to be us by learning it in mere theory, by, in effect, reading it in a book. \u00a0This is experiential knowledge, not reducible to even a very great number of propositions. \u00a0It has to be felt, tasted, lived, at first hand.<\/p>\n
