Haun\u2019s Mill massacre<\/a>, in which, thanks to the efforts of a roughly 250-member mob,\u00a0at least seventeen Mormons and one non-Mormon sympathizer were killed and thirteen more (including a woman and a nine-year-old child) were wounded:<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
After the initial attack, several of those who had been wounded or had surrendered were shot dead. Members of the militia entered the shop and found ten-year-old Sardius Smith, eight-year-old Alma Smith, and nine-year-old Charles Merrick hiding under the blacksmith\u2019s bellows. Alma and Charles were shot (Charles later died), and a militia man known as \u201cGlaze, of Carroll county,\u201d killed Sardius Smith when he \u201cput his musket against Sardius\u2019s skull and blew off the top of his head.\u201d\u00a0Later a William Reynolds would justify the killing by saying, \u201cNits will make lice, and if he had lived he would have become a Mormon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
