known anciently as Gerasa (or\u00a0\u0393\u03ad\u03c1\u03b1\u03c3\u03b1). \u00a0Although the site seems to have been inhabited from prehistoric times, the city as we know it was\u00a0founded by Alexander the Great, apparently as a kind of retirement community for his aging Macedonian soldiers. \u00a0(The word\u00a0\u03b3\u1fc6\u03c1\u03b1\u03c2 or\u00a0<i>g\u0113ras<\/i>\u00a0means \u201cold age\u201d in ancient Greek.) \u00a0Think of St. George, or Del Webb\u2019s Sun City, or \u201cThe Villages (America\u2019s Friendliest Hometown).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jerash\/Gerasa became an important regional metropolis under the Romans, as shown (for example) in its Nymphaeum, its triumphal arch dedicated to the Emperor Hadrian, and its various temples.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33052\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33052\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/04\/800px-Arch_of_Hadrian_Jerash.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-33052\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" Commons)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After lunch, we headed out on a long journey southwards, stopping first at the twelfth-century Crusader castle of al-Shawbak in the ancient land of Edom .<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33054\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33054\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a Commons)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we dropped in for a visit to the area known \u201cLittle Petra,\u201d a Nabatean Arab site that, like its famous nearby namesake, probably reached its highpoint in the first century AD:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33055\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33055\" style=\"width: 578px\" class=\"wp-caption
