<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There is much food for thought in Mr. Syjuco\u2019s analysis \u2014 none of it very comforting.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some have complained about my perception of similarities\u00a0between the emergence of Trumpism and the rise of European fascism in the 1920s and 1930s. \u00a0Accordingly, I won\u2019t mention the parallels that I see between the recent election in the Philippines and the current American presidential campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, another story to watch is Recep Tayyip Erdogan\u2019s continuing consolidation of ever more autocratic power in Turkey. \u00a0With the resignation of Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, another barrier to Mr. Erdogan\u2019s will has been removed.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Authoritarianism is on the rise in a number of countries. \u00a0Perhaps not least \u2014 but most shockingly \u2014 in my own.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Posted from Venice,
