Yesterday, during Sunday school, we read these words\u00a0from Mosiah 10:12-17\u00a0(among many others):<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Lamanites, we\u2019re told, held to \u201cthe\u00a0tradition\u00a0of their fathers, which is this\u2014Believing that they were driven out of the land of Jerusalem because of the iniquities of their fathers, and that they were\u00a0wronged\u00a0in the wilderness by their brethren, and they were also wronged while crossing the sea; and again, that they were wronged while in the land of their\u00a0first\u00a0inheritance, after they had crossed the sea. . . . \u00a0And his brethren were\u00a0wroth\u00a0with [Nephi]\u00a0because they understood\u00a0not the dealings of the Lord; they were also wroth with him upon the waters because they hardened their hearts against the Lord.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>And again, they were\u00a0wroth\u00a0with him when they had arrived in the promised land, because they said that he had taken the\u00a0ruling\u00a0of the people out of their hands; and they sought to kill him.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>And again, they were wroth with him because he departed into the wilderness as the Lord had commanded him, and took the\u00a0records\u00a0which were engraven on the plates of brass, for they said that he\u00a0robbed\u00a0them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>And thus they have taught their children that they should hate them, and that they should murder them, and that they should rob and plunder them, and do all they could to destroy them; therefore they have an eternal hatred towards the children of Nephi.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a whole lot of resentment and anger.<\/p>\n

And, as we read the verses, I couldn\u2019t help thinking\u00a0of the \u201cvictim culture\u201d that sometimes seems so characteristic of our time. \u00a0Everybody is aggrieved, and there are some that seem perpetually \u201cwroth\u201d and enraged.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not healthy.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s deeply divisive.<\/p>\n

Lamanite culture was dysfunctional, and so, in some important ways, is ours.<\/p>\n
