Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Jane Austen, <em>Pride and Prejudice<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t a bad trip\u00a0over. \u00a0I like to watch movies on transoceanic flights. \u00a0On this one, I watched <em>Casablanca<\/em>, which I still regard as almost a perfect film. \u00a0Also <em>Eddie the Eagle<\/em>, which I enjoyed. \u00a0(Rather an inspiring story, in its curious way.) \u00a0And <em>Clueless<\/em>, the 1985 revisioning of Jane Austen\u2019s 1815 novel <em>Emma<\/em> with Alicia Silverstone in the title role. \u00a0Which was appropriate because I\u2019m just about finished re-reading <em>Pride and Prejudice<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve confessed before to my thorough enjoyment of Jane Austen. \u00a0I\u2019m a hopeless romantic, and I sometimes fear that my love for Austen novels and for most movie remakes of them \u2014 I except the 1940 version with Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson, which many people seem to like but which I regard as an abomination \u2014 casts doubt upon my masculinity. \u00a0But there you have it: \u00a0Although I try very hard (and, many of my critics would say, quite successfully) to be vicious, mean-spirited, abusive, and cruel, in my heart of hearts I\u2019m really an incurable sentimentalist.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Posted from Stockholm, Sweden<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cVanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously.
