We\u2019ve never spent this much time in Sweden before, and we\u2019ve enjoyed ourselves enormously.<\/p>\n

In Uppsala, for instance, we devoted much of our attention to the cathedral, the largest Gothic structure in Scandinavia.\u00a0 It\u2019s the burial place of such notables as King Gustavus Vasa<\/a>, the great botanist\u00a0Carl Linnaeus<\/a>, the Nobel laureate Nathan S\u00f6derblom<\/a>, and the remarkable scientist and mystic\u00a0Emanuel Swedenborg<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After \u2014 of all things \u2014 dinner in a Greek restaurant near the cathedral, we drove out to Gamla Uppsala (\u201cOld Uppsala\u201d), the original site of the city.\u00a0 There, we saw the parish church that represents all that is left of the original cathedral.\u00a0 Interestingly, right beside the church is a line of large royal pagan burial mounds.\u00a0 Gamla Uppsala was apparently the site of a major pre-Christian temple, as well as of at least one royal feasting hall or mead hall, much like that of Theoden King and the Riders of Rohan in Tolkien\u2019s Lord of the Rings<\/em>, or the one depicted in Beowulf<\/em>.\u00a0 And that\u2019s not altogether surprising:\u00a0 Uppsala is mentioned<\/em> in Beowulf<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Driving from Uppsala to G\u00f6teborg, we stopped off to take a look at the limestone quarry near \u00d6sterplana, in V\u00e4sterg\u00f6tland,\u00a0where scientists found the \u201cextinct meteorite\u201d that I mentioned here recently.\u00a0 And, while doing so, naturally, we wandered into a number of small medieval churches that dot the area around the microvillages of \u00d6sterplana, Medelplana, and V\u00e4sterplana.\u00a0 Husaby, for instance, marks the place where the first Christian king of Sweden, Olof\u00a0Sk\u00f6tkonung<\/a>, was baptized by the British missionary St. Sigfrid<\/a> around AD 1008.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

So many interesting subjects to learn about, so little time.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I sometimes hear people say that immortal life would be boring.\u00a0 When I hear that statement, I wonder if we\u2019re members of the same species.<\/p>\n
