1.<\/strong><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Our Evangelical Protestant critics like to suggest that we believe that we\u2019ll earn our way into heaven. \u00a0And, unfortunately, some of us have spoken sloppily, and have given the impression that we do<\/em> believe such a thing. \u00a0It\u2019s not true, of course \u2014 there would be little point in the Atonement of Christ if it were, and little reason to feel indebted to him or to the Father for our salvation, if and when we achieve it \u2014 and this passage alone should be enough to demonstrate<\/em> that it\u2019s not true:<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/span>For it is expedient that an\u00a0atonement\u00a0should be made; for according to the great\u00a0plan\u00a0of the Eternal God there must be an atonement made, or else all mankind must unavoidably perish; yea, all are hardened; yea, all are\u00a0fallen\u00a0and are lost, and must perish except it be through the atonement which it is expedient should be made.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
2.<\/strong><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
I like the image, in 34:15-16, that mercy gathers us in her arms \u2014 the word mercy<\/em> is feminine in Hebrew and Arabic \u2014 and protects us against threatening justice.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
3.<\/strong><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
I also like the counsel, given in 34:20-25, to pray over our flocks and our crops. \u00a0In today\u2019s terms, it advises us to, yes, pray over our small businesses and our dental offices and our law practices and our auto shops and our other temporal concerns.<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Finally, the urgent warning of 34:32-35 is probably the most famous passage from this chapter and among the most well-known in the Book of Mormon \u2014 and for very good reason.<\/p>\n
